Back to School: Student Health

Back to School: Student HealthIt’s that time of year again, so let’s look at this year’s edition of Back to School: Student Health.

It’s back to school time, and with back to school comes a slew of new experiences. As students adjust to new surroundings and acquaintances, they’re also adjusting to new biology – back to school time often means new germs, in the air, on their hands, and on nearly everything they touch.

There are a few keys to staying healthy as everyone adapts to the stress and germs of the ‘Back to School’ season.

1) Keep the body health: Get plenty of rest, as sleep deprivation lowers the immune system’s ability to combat infection, and eat a healthy diet – especially one high in vitamin C.
2) Avoid germy areas – bathrooms, busses, cafeteria trays, art supplies, sports equipment, playground equipment, and drinking fountains are hotbeds of germs.
3) When you can’t avoid the germs, wash your hands regularly – not just a quick splash, but 20 seconds with soap and warm water will combat germs.
4) Exercise – boosting metabolism and lowering stress is great for boosting immune response and keeping you healthy.

With age comes increased awareness of hygiene, so reminding young children to establish good hand washing practice early is a great way to minimize the chance of student health problems in the coming months.

Whether you’re a student, a parent, or even a teacher, knowing the basics – minimize stress, maximize rest, maintain health, and wash your hands – is a great way to stay healthy in the new school year.
