Thanksgiving Dental Tips: Football Players Aren’t the Only Ones Playing

Thanksgiving dental tipsThanksgiving is all about eating loads of food. Take a moment to consider these Thankgiving dental tips and save your teeth the stress.

Instead of focusing on all of the snacks lying around before the big meal, limit yourself to the healthier variety. Carbs are sugars in disguise, and sugars are never good for your teeth. Instead of choosing the chips and dip, switch it up and dip your veggies into those dips. Broccoli and carrots are always on the snack table and loaded with vitamin A. Calcium-rich foods like cheese, tofu and dark greens are made up of stuff that will strengthen your teeth, instead of eating away at them.

When it comes to game time, I mean dinnertime, keep things balanced. Turkey and ham are staples on this day. Protein-packed foods like these are not only great for countering your sweet tooth, but also stimulates saliva production, your mouth’s natural cavity fighter. Because it takes longer to chew high-protein foods, loading up on these things is actually great for you.

We all know that drinking red wine will stain your teeth, but has some health benefits. But it’s the acidity in it that is bad for your teeth. Eventually, these acids will break down the enamel on your teeth, making them weaker and more prone to dental issues. Champagne is even worse because of its carbonation. So if you choose to partake in an adult beverage or two, keep a glass of water handy to sip on between your sips of wine.

After dinner, and before or after your nap, comes dessert. This is the worst time in the day for your teeth, but the most amazing time in the day for your belly. Pies and cookies, cakes and crumbles, it’s impossible to stay away from something sweet after such a delightful meal with loved ones. Don’t deny yourself, but be mindful of how much you’re consuming. Sub in sweet foods like apples or berries every so often so you don’t eat so many sweets.

It’s always important, but make sure you look after your teeth during the holiday season. Brush, floss, and rinse every day to keep your smile healthy and bright. At the end of the day, Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks surrounded by those you love. So give thanks to your teeth while you’re at it. They work overtime during this food-filled festivity.
