The Plus Side to Cosmetic Dentistry

Plus Side to Cosmetic DentistryLet’s take a moment to look at the plus side to cosmetic dentistry.

As we begin to take steps towards improving ourselves and our lifestyles, it wouldn’t be completely out of line to think about more cosmetic enhancements. Nothing life-threatening, but something that can completely change your life more than you may think – cosmetic dentistry.

From subtle changes to major repairs, your dentist can perform a variety of procedures to improve your smile with techniques that can help teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing. Let’s take a look at the more common procedures:

Bonding. Bonding is tooth-colored material used to fill in gaps or change the color of teeth for several years, but is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other options. The advantage? It can close spaces between teeth or change the color and shape of a tooth.

Bleaching. Discoloration occurs in the enamel and can be caused by medication, diet, cigarettes, hereditary or due simply to getting older. Bleaching can be performed by your dentist in the office or, under dental supervision, at home. The advantage? You have a bright white grin.

Contouring. Tooth reshaping and contouring, is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of your teeth, or help correct small problems with bite. It is common for bonding to be combined with tooth reshaping. The advantage? It’s ideal for candidates with normal, healthy teeth who want subtle changes to their smile.

Veneers. Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic placed over the front teeth to change the color or shape of your teeth. Veneers are used on teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced or crooked. The advantage? Veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding.
