As you start this new year, here are a few dental health habits to start and keep in 2018.

The problem is, our mouths are the gateway to a lot of bacteria that can spread throughout our bodies, so it is important to keep our dental health up as much as it is our overall health. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind as you make your resolution list:

Brush your teeth. We all brush our teeth, but do you brush as much as you should? Dentists suggest brushing at least twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. After you brush, make sure you are getting any time of residual particles by giving your teeth a quick floss as well. When it comes to mouthwash, you may have been taught to do it after you brush, but if you do it before, you can loosen any food particles in your mouth, making your toothbrush’s job a little easier. Having regular checkups and cleanings will ensure that your teeth and gums are in tip-top shape.

Kick the bad habits to the curb. Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease, and is also linked to a variety of other health complications. Alcohol and drug abuse are also both very bad for your teeth, and health overall. Even sugar is directly linked to tooth decay, so minimizing sugar consumption can cut a person’s risk for tooth decay by a huge margin. Instead, give your diet a healthy boost by working in more calcium, and fibrous foods like fruits and vegetables.
